Visit Governors Island To Squeeze the Most Out of NYC Summer

It’s the day after Labor Day which means most publications have moved unabashedly into FALL! AUTUMN! PUMPKIN! BOOTS! fever. Not mine. This week’s highs are in the 90s and I’m still high on summer lovin’ life, damn it! I have every intention of remaining so until  the stroke of midnight on the official equinox, Saturday September 22nd!

Happily, there is one place in NYC where it always feels like summer.

It’s Always Summer on Governors Island!

Governors Island is just a 10 minute ferry ride from downtown Manhattan but it’s a whole world away. The hustle and bustle, constant stress, and relentless drive of the city all melt away into the New York Harbor on that short ferry ride.

The island is only open from May through October, so it’s no surprise it always feels like a tiny summer vacation. Honestly there’s nothing to do here that isn’t fun, recreation, and relaxation!

Look at these wide open spaces! It’s impossible to even imagine an open lawn like this on a Saturday in Manhattan!

The views on New York City can’t be beat. The proximity to the Statue of Liberty rivals that of the Staten Island Ferry.

Visiting Governors Island is one of my all-time favorite things to do New York City. It’s magical and I rave about it every single year! There is a Hammock Grove that’s delightful, events that are pure fun, and I always seem to stumble across something unexpected that I talk about for the rest of the year. This year that was the Governors Island Teaching Garden.

Governors Island Teaching Garden

It’s a garden and farm stand with views of One World Trade! Come one, how could I not love this!

Shockingly, the produce grown on this wee island is cheap! Much more affordable than the Union Square Greenmarket, I got an heirloom tomato for price that made me wonder if I should take the ferry ride every weekend and do all my shopping here…

I think the purpose of this garden is to teach city kids where food comes from, not enchant 30-somethings like me… Good thing I have no shame! This garden fulfills all my backyard fantasies. Maybe it’ll inspire me to take the plunge and get a window box this fall…

If you’re like me and want to hold on to summer for as long as possible, get yourself on that Governors Island Ferry ASAP!

If you’re a Fall Lover who is terribly disappointed I’m not all about PSLs right now…just wait ’til Governors Island announces their October events. Last year’s Night of 1000 Jack-o-lanterns was supposed to be incredible!
