7 Outdoor Activities That Are Worth Braving the Heat of NYC Summer

It is officially summer in the city! I, for one, am sweaty and loving my favorite season. Here’s what I love most about NYC summer, outdoor activities that absolutely make the sweltering streets worth it!

Governors Island

A magical escape to an island that’s just a 10 minute ferry ride from NYC. I’ve waxed poetically about Governors Island many many many times, it’s absolutely wonderful and a city summer must.

Shakespeare in the Park

I missed their first production of the season, but Twelfth Night begins previews July 17th and I already have plans to be there for the 1st public performance. It’s always pretty easy easy to get tickets that early in the run, despite what you may have heard about the notorious line. Check out my tips for getting FREE tickets and see world class theatre outdoors in Central Park!

Sunsets

New York City summer has THE BEST sunsets! Here’s hoping the upcoming Manhattanhenge delivers- learn more about that: Manhattanhenge 2018: Where to see NYC’s stunning sunset

Rooftop Bars

Outside, high among the sky scrapers, with a cold beverage in hand is the best. Check out Thrillist’s: Best Rooftop Bars in NYC

Coney Island

Sun, sand, surf, a boardwalk, rides, AND a freak show! Who could ask for anything more? Coney Island is so New York and a city summer essential

SO MANY Free Outdoor Events

Movies, concerts, Broadway, yoga, even writing classes – there are SO MANY incredible outdoor events from now through September!

Getting Out on the Water!

Anyway, any how! Getting out on the many waterways surrounding NYC is one of the most fun and coolest (literally) parts of summer in the city. There’s FREE KAYAKING on both the Hudson and East River, row boating in Central Park is so much more affordable then you’d ever guess, and the Staten Island ferry is alway the best and cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty! There’s also the Ikea Water Taxi, ferries that will take you to Rockaway Beach, and even boats that will take you to a bar on a barge just north of Ellis Island!
