Dog Walking in New York City

It seems so hard to have a dog in New York City. The New York clichés of tiny apartments, few back yards, and significant commutes can be enough to turn dog lovers into cat people. It seemed to me like the cons far outweighed the pros. That all changed this week when I took a friend’s puppy for a walk.

Isn’t he the cutest golden doodle fluff?

Turns out that having a puppy beside you of the city streets completely transforms the New York experience. Everyone is friendly! Strangers interact with you constantly. Attractive women squeal and run up to you. I see the appeal here. A puppy is kind of like a celebrity, except it’s not weird if you ask if you can pet them!

Walking this guy was like bringing a little beam of sunshine where ever I go. New York seems like nothing but smiles and “awwws!” when you’re with a puppy.

I’ve always going on walks, but felt the activity is side-eyed, especially for people my age. In our “busy” loving culture, we’re not supposed to have time for walks! They’re not time efficient exercise! A dog gives you the perfect reason to go on multiple walks a day!

These are 3 good reasons to get a dog, right?

1. Fluffy’s the perfect an excuse to go on walk!
2. Rex is a reliable way to delight strangers. No rude New Yorkers ever again!
3. Fido is my ticket to finally enter the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade!

Okay, okay, obviously I shouldn’t get a dog any time soon. I’m not ready to give up my happy hours to rush home for a walk that even a self proclaimed Walk Lover wouldn’t enjoy. But I can absolutely recommend:

The next time the grind of the city is getting you down, do yourself a favor and doing a favor for your friend who has a dog. Give that pup a walk and watch your world transform.

I wonder how long it takes for the sunshine and rainbow(wow) novelty to wear off…Or are the city’s professional dog walkers  secretly happier than the rest of us ?

Hey, New Yorkers with dogs! Please share with us how you do it! Do you get used to how friendly NYC is when you’re with your dog, and then get sad later when it’s just you and no one’s smiling anymore?

  1. Awesome Article. I really appreciate and love to know that you are a dog lover. I was not a great lover of pets a few years back. But one day I gifted a golden retriever puppy to my wife and now we both are great dog lovers. Even I have started writing several blogs on dogs. I feel motivated when I see the person like you writing such great articles. Really impressive, thanks for sharing!
