The First NYC Sunset of Summer Was Absolutely Stunning – Happy Solstice!

Today was the longest day of the year and boy, oh boy, did the New York City summer skies celebrate.

Happy summer solstice from Brooklyn!

The first day of summer ended with a spectacular sunset. The kind that slows down traffic on 14th Street and has people standing in the middle of intersections trying to capture the contrast of natural splendor above the concrete jungle. I hauled out the screen from my kitchen window in Brooklyn and climbed out onto my fire escape to get a good look at the sky.  Read More

Summer in the City Recommendation: Buy Yourself a Frozen Flower at Amorino Gelato

New York City summer humidity has hit and that means one thing. I want to eat ice cream all the time. Fortunately, NYC has more options for frozen treats than there are meals in the day with ice cream, soft serve, frozen yogurt, and gelato. Today I popped into Amorino  Gelato in Greenwich Village. It’s a popular gelato chain from Italy that now has locations all over the world, including 4 in NYC.

Amorino Gelato, Greenwich Village

They are known for their flower cones, often toped with suggestive looking macarons. Missing the explosion of spring flowers that have long since left the city, it’s no surprise I’m seeking them out in my food.

This little girl cried out “I want an ice cream macaron!” as she walked past. Only NYC kids! There are no scoops here, only petals, a method that is not only pretty, but allows for trying many more flavors than a simple scoop might. I went for 3 fruity tastes: lemon, melon, and their seasonal special black current.

I know I may have lost the chocolate lovers among you. I love fruit gelato, especially in the summer. Amorino gelato was amazingly flavorful, the lemon and black current tangy and acidic, the melon mellow and sweet. They went especially well together.

Nothing like gelato in the summer time

I opted out of the signature macaron topping. The cone alone was quite enough, thank you.I didn’t need anything distracting me from frozen deliciousness, no matter how much  love macarons.

This location at University Place and 10th Street is an especially good date spot. A first date of gelato instead of typical drinks is a nice way to mix things up. I usually think flowers are too much for a first date, but gelato ones are actually perfect. The cafe is spacious and cozy while Washington Square Park is the perfect stroll away.

Other Amorino Gelato locations in NYC are:

Theater District at 721 8th Ave between 45th and 46th
UWS at 414 Amsterdam Ave and 80th
Chelsea at 162 8th Avenue and 18th

Do you go for fruit or milk when ordering gelato in the summer? What’s your favorite gelato flavor?

How to Blog Under Emotional Distress

Step 1. Sit down to write a blog post.

Step 2. Be consumed by thoughts and anxiety. Shove them aside with some trusty procrastination!

Step 3. Catch up on all your favorite bloggers and Youtubers! There are definitely enough great posts to keep you at this for a couple hours! Read Ali’s spot on “No Explanation Necessary“, nodding your head the whole way through. Next, distract yourself with glorious retail therapy from Emma’s “My 10 Summer Essentials“. Then enjoy some vicarious NYC love with Tip and JAM’s The Bad Portrait Artist. When you watch Karen Murray’s latest vlog on her Diary of a Failing Actress/Human Being Youtube channel, your heart will reach out to her and her incredible vulnerability. And BOOM you remember all your own shit too!

Step 4. Fuck. You just spent over 2 hours not writing a single word. Fuck. Your internet binge didn’t even give you any good ideas. Fuck.

Step 5. Think of silly fluff pieces you could write: “The Tell Tale Signs of a New York City Tourist” or “7 Essential Things to Pack for Your NYC Vacation!”.

Step 6. Commit to one: “7 Essentials to Pack for Your NYC Vacation”. Great! You got this!

Step 7. Brainstorm a funny, informative listicle!

Step 8: ….

Step 9. Think about all the other things on your mind instead. You kinda wish you could blog about them… You also know that is positively ill advised…

Step 10. Tell you brain to STFU and stay on task!! Packing!! Essentials!!

Step 11. Hand sanitizer and comfortable shoes. That’s literally all you come up with. Two bullshit, obvious things does not make a blog post. Fuck.

Step 12. Start to cry. A creative block on top of all your emotions and general feeling of shittiness is just too much!

Step 13. You need this catharsis. Go for it.

Step 14. Cry harder at the realization that you don’t fucking have time for this right now! You should be finishing a blog post! You committed to blogging everyday, this is important to you!

Step 15. Call your best friend and cry all the things to her that you are feeling right now. She’s a good listener, really the best. She’s in Germany so she’s eating breakfast while you’re spilling and wishing you could just go to sleep. That would probably make you feel so, so much better, but FUCK you HAVE to blog!!

Step 16. Feel so much better after talking to your bestie. Ugh, friends are the best.

Step 17. Having talked it all out and gotten some things off your chest, you can finally sit down and write this blog post. Cap it off with a pretty picture from Randall’s Island:

I’m going through some stuff right now but no need to worry about me, I promise! Thanks for reading♥

Weekly New York Minutes #22

Every Friday (but this week delayed until Sunday!) I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for the last technical week of spring…

Pretty much every time I walk through Bryant Park in the summer, I see something delightful. This time it was a painter trying to capture the Empire State Building, which always looks striking across the lawn. Read More

Street Art Saturday: Naughty Bunnies and Lower East Side Legs

There’s a bar on the Lower East Side called Leave Rochelle Out of It, Rochelle’s for short, that has some sexy street art on its northern wall.

LES LEGS

Brings to mind after midnights on the LES where everything started sexy and glamorous, and the devolves to gum and garbage and walking barefoot on the filthy streets on New York because your high heels hurt and you’re too drunk to have common sense. See the handle of the artist and you have to love it – @gumshoeart. Read More

12 Fears New Yorkers Have When Leaving NYC for More Than 24 Hours

I left New York City for 48 hours to work a PA gig and one of my worst fears came true. There was no WiFI and my cellphone service was spotty! The horror! There wasn’t even a Starbucks in the 10 mile area I could run to!I hadn’t even considered the possibility! Thus my impressive 7 month streak of daily blogging had an unexpected hiccup this week. I spent 48 hours feeling helpless about my neglected blog and pondering:

Reasons New Yorkers Hate Being Outside NYC

1. No WiFI and/or unpredictable cell service.

2. There will be no good coffee.

3. The people making the not-good coffee will do so at 25% the speed of any New York barista, making you want to scream at them, WHY ARE YOU SO FUCKING SLOW!?

GODDAMN IT I JUST WANT MY COFFEE.

Oh it’s so nice and peaceful to be out of the city! But also SCARY!!!
