Weekly New York Minutes #42

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this FREEZING, gloomy winter week…

It was my fella’s birthday this week and to celebrate we went ice skating in Bryant Park! This is one of the few things NYC winter gets to claim as superior to other seasons. Going on a Saturday night is always a little stressful because it’s crowded and you never know when a kid flailing in front of you might fall, but we still had a blast gliding around the Bryant Park Winter Village. We both want to go back soon and I also need to write a blog post dedicated to skating here because there are a LOT of tips to make the experience better (and cheaper!).

Saw this ad on the subway wall and now I am convinced Vicks advertising execs are reading my blog. Should I go around the city and tag all these posters with a Sharpie #newyorkcliche?

Logically, I know this is an art piece in Midtown (around 54th and Park) and that the figures are statues. But as I passed by on Tuesday, when temperatures were in the teens, I almost yelled at them, “Go inside! It’s too cold for loitering today!” I wonder if that was the artist’s intent…

It felt like the whole city was bummed out by the weather on Thursday. The sky was so gloomy and dark it felt like a 15 mile-wide, hostile alien space craft was hovering above NYC. (Note: over the weekend I watched Independence Day, the ’96 original, for the very first time!) When I left work a 4:30PM it was still raining. I couldn’t bring myself to do anything after work in the rainy gloom, so I got on the subway and headed home. As the train emerged from the tunnel, the sky was ablaze with sunshine and the stunning array of clouds you see pictured above. Just what I needed to start looking on the bright side at the end of a somewhat stressful work week.

So there are some fun little moments from my week. How was yours? Any fun weekend plans? I’m going to see a show in Bushwick tonight…an activity I don’t think I’ve done since hitting age 30… We’ll see how it holds up, you bet I’ll let you know if it’s blog-worthy!
