New York Weekly Minutes #39

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this November fall week…

Sunday was the New York Marathon. I didn’t make it to the side lines to cheer on the runners, but I did get a kick out of seeing the Queensboro Bridge COMPLETELY car-free at 4PM on race day! In a city known for bonkers traffic, it was very disorienting to see!

Election Day had this wonderful buzz of energy in the city. The Empire State Building was lit up red, white, and blue as I took the subway home. My polling place was awesomely crowded when I went to vote at around 7PM in Queens. I reckon NYC polling places are some of the most diverse places in the world and it was so heartening to see how many parents were making their kids part of the process. It made me feel so optimistic about politics for the first time in ages.

Road the subway with this adorable Shiba Inu puppy and it basically made me forget any complaint I have EVER had about the MTA. More puppies on trains please!

I saw the wonderfully weird, absurd and hilarious play “Happy Birthday, Wanda June” Off Broadway. It was written by Kurt Vonnegut in 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War. It satirizes the macho masculinity and glorification of war heroes. The play is very much a period piece but the relevance it has to today is striking, sickening, and also laugh out loud funny. Wheelhouse Theater Company does a wonderful job with this revival. If you like absurdist plays, I’d say it is a must see! Jason O’Connell steals the show and is disturbing and absolutely incredible to watch. Find ticket info HERE.

Those are some of the fun NYC moments of my week! It was a busy one, as you may have inferred my my lack of posts… I needed a bit of a break – hope you all get a great break this weekend!
