New York is know as a town in love with labels. It’s not just for shoes, handbags, clothing, and make up that we get obsessed with designers though. Oh now. We love designer desserts too. With the same make up percentage you’d find from Payless to Prada, designer desserts have the luxury of still being affordable for everyone. Is it mental to pay $4 for two-bite macaron? Yes. But I can afford it! It makes me feel like I’m soiling myself, that I’m worth more than the entire pack of Oreos I could have eaten for the same price (and probably in as many sittings!)!
We’ll wait in massive lines for cookies the size of our face, we’ll get cupcakes out of ATMS, and we’ll eat ice cream that’s flavor profile is intended to mimic that of milk left in the bowl after you finish all your cereal.
Are you Team “That milk is the best!!” or Team “Uh, that sounds gross”?
Cereal Milk at Momofuku MILK BAR
David Chang, one of NYC’s most famous chefs and the founder of the Momofuku restaurant group, has a dessert shop called Milk Bar that specializes in this flavor. They sell actual bottles of the milk that tastes just like the milk at the bottom of a cereal bowl. Milk Bar specializes in many innovative desserts, but one of the best know is their soft serve “Cereal Milk” ice cream topped with cornflake crunchy topping.
This little cup of soft serve cost me $7.35. When the cashier told me how much I owed, I worried I’d order some massively large sundae version. Nope. Just David Chang’s designer dessert.
Is Momofuku Cereal Milk soft serve worth it?
No! Momofuku Cereal Milk ice cream was not worth $7.35 to me at all! You know I’m happy to pay $4 for a macaron or $5 for a matcha latte! But the whole time I was eating this cup, I kinda couldn’t help but thinking…if I’m paying $7 for ice cream….there really should be hot fudge, whipped cream, and a goddamn cherry on top! Or like, a pint?
I’m sorry, I’m calling this Momofuku legendary designer dessert both over-priced and over-hyped.
It was just too expensive and not special enough to warrant that price tag. I did eat the whole thing and enjoy it. The ice cream is creamy and only subtly sweet which is refreshing. The cornflakes offered a nice crunchy contrast. But I was expecting my socks to be knocked off. Which they were- by the price not the taste!
I know, I know, I’ve lived in NYC 10 years! Every thing is always more expensive than you think, I should know this by now! The minute I walked into Milk Bar I could tell it was too trendy for me. The neon sign should’ve been a dead give away that the signature Cereal Milk was going to be priced as if it was made by Oompa-Loompas, hand soaking cereal in milk to create this flavor.
But hey, it’s been a huge hit since 2009, so what do I know? Still, if you’re visiting NYC and not a huuuuuge cereal lover or foodie, skip the Cereal Milk ice cream. You’ll probably be happier with a cone from Mr. Softee.
If you do want to visit Milk Bar, get the Crack Pie. It’s a small slice for $5, but it’s a taste and texture you won’t find elsewhere…oooh the same can be said for the Cereal Milk ice cream!
For Milk Bar locations (wow I did NOT realize how many there are in NYC), check out their website: here.
Have you been to Milk Bar? Do you love this dessert? Did you used to slurp all the milk at the bottom of your cereal bowl? Do you think $7 is a reasonable price to pay for ice cream? Do you think it’s hilarious that a self proclaimed New York Cliché is complaining about something in NYC being expensive?
So funny, I just watched the episode on Chef’s Table about Milk Bar a couple of weeks ago and wanted to try it, but was turned off by the long line last weekend! I’d heard the serving was tiny, but can’t believe it’s $7 for that little “tasting-sized” cup! I’m actually pretty bummed to hear this, because the creator (Christina Tosi) is from a small town and was like “I want to create a place that’s accessible for everyone, you don’t have to have a lot of time or money to enjoy my creations…” HA! What a joke. Probably will be crossing this off my list without even trying…

Yeah, cereal milk isn’t anything amazing to me. It’s just… weird. If I’m gonna pay $7 for ice cream, it better be AMAZING and/or BIG. Then again, when I eat cereal (not often) I eat it dry. I do want to try the Crack Pie Latte, though!
