New York Cliché of the Day: The Sprinkles Cupcake ATM

Sprinkles Cupcakes on Lexington Avenue has a Cupcake ATM. Yes, a Cupcake Automated Teller Machine. Only in New York would someone take a banal chore like going to the ATM and make it a cutesy cupcake novelty.

Here’s the Scoop on the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM

You go up to the ATM, tap the screen to pick your cupcake, swipe your card and a little door opens to give you your chosen cupcake, perfectly packaged in a brown box.

The Cupcake ATM only accepts withdrawals, no deposits!

What a great convenience if you’re in an antisocial mood and don’t want to deal with people whose chosen career is to work with cupcakes! I also imagine this being a lovely option for sunny days when the weather is so nice, you can’t bare to leave the sunshine!

The tasty setup inside Sprinkles Cupcakes.

I chose to visit the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM at one of the most in opportune times of year. During Friday’s Nor’easter when it was sleeting and snowing with high power winds! They had to put a plastic shield over the ATM screen to shield it from the elements!

Still, I’m glad I did it! I’ve heard about this Cupcake ATM for years, and as I walked by it on the way to a birthday party, it really did seem like I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, no mater how brutal the wind was.

Is the Cupcake ATM worth the hype? Worth a visit?

I’d say it’s definitely not worth going out of your way to visit. It’s very much a gimmick (the worlds first cupcake ATM!) , and the whole process really isn’t that exciting. Honestly, I think this was Sprinkles Cupcakes’ way of getting press and competing with Magnolia Bakery – a pretty successful move!

If you’re in the area and jonesing for something sweet, or in need of a small gift for someone, sure, stop by. “I got this from the Cupcake ATM!” is a great conversation starter at any kind of party!  The NYC Sprinkles Cupcake ATM is located on the UES, at 61st Street and Lexington.

  1. Yeah but wait what’s up with that piece of paper over the screen? Is that to deter passersby from idly pressing buttons if they’re not serious about buying a cupcake? To keep tourists from playing with the machine if they don’t know what’s really going on? Is it to protect the machinery from The Wind??? I’m so confused and also now I really want a cupcake.
