New York Cliché of the Day: Sarah Jessica Parker Celebrity Sighting

One of the most coveted spots on the cliché New York Vacation Bucket List is SPOT A CELEBRITY. With this star-studded season of Broadway shows, you can make this happen by loitering around the stage doors of Meteor Shower or Waitress. With some patience you’re very likely to likely catch a glimpse of Amy Schumer, Keegan-Michael Key, or Jason Mraz. Of course the most satisfying celebrity sightings are out in the wilds of the Concrete Jungle. While it’s a tough order if you’re just visiting, call Manhattan for any length of time, and you will see celebrities. “They’re just like us.”

My most recent run-in was with the absolute ultimate New York cliché A-lister. I ran into none other than Carrie Bradshaw herself on a Friday night in the West Village.

New York Cliché of the Day: the Other Side of the New York City Marathon

Every year, just as I’ve gorged myself on enough Halloween candy to feel thoroughly ashamed, an army of exercise mavens descends upon New York City.

The New York City Marathon

Always the first Sunday in November, the 2017 New York City Marathon ran through our 5 boroughs yesterday. It was gray and rainy and I completely avoided it. The photo above is from last year when it was beautiful and sunny. When I ran right into the marathon after a weekend getaway upstate.

If you need to walk across town during the New York City Marathon, what the heck are you suppose to do?

New York Cliché of the Day: Preschool and the City

The private preschools in NYC are notoriously competitive. There’s a grueling application process which includes interviewing people who can barely talk yet. It’s so cut-throat there are professional preschool admission coaches! The tuition at the most desirable schools is more than a public college education! It’s a scene that is a source of jokes and bafflement for those on the outside but taken incredibly seriously by those involved.

I have very little reason to ever think of preschool. But I walked by one the other day and was absolutely delighted by what I saw in the window.

New York Cliché of the Day: Picture Perfect Street Harassment

On a late summer afternoon, I went for a New York City wander. It’s one of my favorite things to do: pick a neighborhood I know has street art, good coffee shops, and plentiful people watching. With my camera in hand, I’ll be content to walk around New York for hours. This is my preferred fitness routine.

I started my wander at First Street Green Art Park, at the corner of 1st Ave and 1st Street. On the boarder of the Lower East Side and the East Village, two perfect neighborhoods for wandering, this tiny “park” always features awesome street art. (It’s worth visiting even in a blizzard!) This park is full of color, never crowded.

I thought this would be a perfect place to set up a self timer and get some photos of myself for blog/Instagram purposes.
Totally blogger cliché.

So I set up my camera, took a photo with a giant, cheerful heart in the background by street artist Hektad! Immediately following, I looked at the photo to see if it was Insta-worthy. Ehh…why was I doing a weird thing with my leg? Why does my posture suck!? Starring at my camera, I decided to retake the photo. I looked up saw two men were approaching me.  Read More

New York Cliché of the Day: Terror Attack on New York City

There was a terrorist attack on New York City yesterday. My phone was flooded with texts from concerned friends – Are you okay? Yes, I’m fine. I am fine and jaded. I read the news and felt more jaded then I ever have in my entire life.

My reaction to hearing there was a terror attack mere miles from where I sat was painfully matter-of-fact.

There was an attack on New York? Of course there was. This is the world we live in. I walk the streets every day aware that something horrible could happen at any moment.

The Real Sexy Halloween Costumes of New York

There are few clichés bigger (or more revealing) than the Sexy Halloween Costume Cliché. Every year retailers spend less and less on fabric, trying to make the skimpiest outfits possible. Every year ladies give their skin one last hurrah before bundling it up to the outside world for the cold season.

It’s never been my scene. I reliably chose “cute” over “sexy” and prefer to assemble my Halloween costumes over buying a full ensemble from the store. But this October I couldn’t help but wonder, maybe I should embrace cliché in every way…

New York Cliché of the Day: Podcasting in Your Friend’s Apartment

5 years ago, every New York creative cliché you knew was starting a blog. These days, they’re all starting podcasts.

Don’t go thinking I’m an exception to this rule! Where’s my NYC podcast, you ask? I’m working on it, I promise.

In the meantime, that’s what friends are for! A couple weeks ago, I sat on the couch in my buddy Justin’s apartment and recorded an episode for his storytelling podcast “Did you hear the one…” Total New York cliché…
