Black and white cookies are an iconic NYC dessert everyone forgets about! You don’t hear many tourist visiting NYC exclaiming, “Oh, I must get a black-and-white from Zaro’s while I’m here!”
New York City is the Best Gym I Ever Had
My senior year of college, I went to the gym almost every single day. It was a final attempt to shed the cliché Freshman 15 I’d maintained since my first semester. I memorized lines on the elliptical, read novels for my English Lit class while jogging on the treadmill.
After seeing an article in SHAPE about the importance of muscle to weight loss, I even ventured downstairs to the intimidating weight area. There, the male to female ratio was the opposite of my theatre classes. I PUMPED IRON next to cute boys whose sporting events I never attended.
Nothing worked. My clothes fit the same and the number on the scale barely budged.
My plan was to move to NYC immediately after graduation to pursue a career in theatre. I couldn’t resist those New York Cliché dreams of Broadway! But I’d tried my best to prepare and failed – I was worried I’d be passed over for roles because of my weight.
[Replay Cliché] Bikini Season Comes Early: Out In Public In A Bra
Originally posted in April 2013. My feeling about bikinis hasn’t changed!
Bikini season is just around the corner. Says every women’s magazine currently in distribution: 5 Essential Pieces of Hot Bikini Body Wisdom, The No-Diet Bikini Secret, The Best Swimsuit for Your Body Shape! When you compare the amount of time these magazines demand you devote to getting “bikini ready” to time you’ll actually wear said bikini, the ratio is abysmally similar to the male to female ratio at a motorcycle convention.
This cultural obsession with the illusive “bikini bod” is enough to make a lady gather every women’s magazine in circulation and air-lift them all to a secluded beach. As the periodicals are dumped into a huge pit, we’ll sprinkle lighter fluid on the smiling faces of the cover models. With a sparkler in one hand and a chocolate eclair in the other, we’ll scream with glee as we light the blaze. Late into the night as the fire rages, we’ll dance around the pyre to a playlist of Madonna and Alanis Morissette. We’ll drink margaritas and toast to never baring our bellies in public again!
A girl can dream. The reality is swimsuit season arrived early this year for me. Last week I accepted a job promoting a walk for breast cancer. “How wonderful to work for such a fantastic cause!” I thought, “Sounds like an amazing event!”
Then they told me the uniform: black athletic pants and elaborately decorated bra. The team would all be wearing bras on the streets of New York City. It doesn’t get more belly blaring than that.

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” This week has been a monster and until today I really haven’t had one minute to stop and think, let alone take a photo! I wasn’t sure I would have ANYTHING for this New York Minutes post, but then today I had a lunch break with no errands to run. The sun was shining, it was warm out FINALLY, people on the streets were smiling! Really, New Yorkers were smiling! All these moments are from my lunch break today!

Coffee Shops I Like to Blog At: The Bean
I often go to coffee shops not for the joe, but for a place to write. I have to squeeze in the time for daily blogging whenever and where ever I can! Coffee shops are vital spaces for New Yorkers. So many of us have roommates as well as commutes that make it impossible to pop home between things. When I go to a coffee shop, I think of it as renting a seat more than buying a beverage! Caffeine addictions are of course a New York cliché too. For the first coffee shop I like to blog at-
The Bean
The Bean has reached the status of local chain, it’s so popular it now has four locations in NYC. Three are in the East Village alone, one in Williamsburg. If you’re and artsy-fartsy type (like me), it’s hard not to love the ambiance the minute you step inside! Read More
