Stardust and Naked Sadness at the David Bowie Subway Takeover

New Yorkers want to get out of subway stations as quickly as possible. The less time spent waiting for trains, the better. But plaster the walls with one of our favorite rock ‘n roll icons and suddenly being underground isn’t so wretched.

David Bowie invades the  Broadway-Lafayette subway station

If my train is going to be late (and it is), gazing at the gorgeous face and many fashion stylings of the late, great David Bowie is a much superior past time than watching rats run across the tracks. Until May 13th, instead of staring down the dark tunnel, hoping to see a light, we get to stare into the light eyes of a rock god. Read More

Seeing a Concert at Carnegie Hall is the Classiest of NY Clichés – Here’s What To Expect!

There’s nothing like going to a concert at Carnegie Hall. It is one of those distinctive New York City experiences that fills your heart to the top with feeling, “Wow. How lucky am I to live here? That this is just a subway ride from my house?”

People come from all over the world to concerts at Carnegie Hall. Performers and audience members alike.

“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” is the obligatory cliché joke. For a select few at the top of their craft, the answer is “Practice.” For the rest of us, it’s “Take the NQRW train to 57th Street.”

[Replay Cliché] Talk Is Cheap, Listening Is Free

Originally posted in April 2012. Back when my blog had very few pictures
and was all about the stories. This is the start of one of my favorites.

I was walking home through Central Park, when I saw something out of the ordinary from everyone people sitting in the park in the beautiful spring weather:

A friendly looking guy seated by a cardboard sign with the words “Free Listening” drawn on it.

I couldn’t help but smile. We exchanged “Hellos” as I walked by him. I got about 10 yards before I stopped dead in my tracks. “You can’t just walk by a sign like that!” I thought to myself. “I have to turn around, talk to a stranger, and see what he’s about!”

“Well, you caught my curiosity. I didn’t get too far. This is my double-take.” I said to the guy with the sign. Read More

Street Art Saturday: TMO Plater in Court Square LIC

Street art is typically painted directly on urban walls. Across from the Court Square subway station in Queens, there’s a granite building up for lease. No business is in it currently, a characteristic that often makes places prime for street art. But you can’t just paint over granite…

Artist TMO Plater found a way to get his art up anyway!

These are canvases attached to the wall some how. The building must be ok with it, what with security cameras above half of them. Read More

Weekly New York Minutes #16

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some others that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for the first week of warmth May…

Biking down 21st Street in Chelsea, I hit the breaks to photograph this absolutely gorgeous brownstone. It made the whole portion of the block it’s on smell nice! As I was stopped, another biker pulled up beside me to get a photograph himself. Then a nine or ten year old boy walked by with his family and audibly gasped. It made me so happy to hear a little dude get excited about flowers. Located on 21st, between 9th and 10th if you wanna see for yourself. So  jealous of those people walking in! Read More

NYC Designer Dessert Discussion: Is Momofuku Cereal Milk Soft Serve Worth the Hype?

New York is know as a town in love with labels. It’s not just for shoes, handbags, clothing, and make up that we get obsessed with designers though. Oh now. We love designer desserts too. With the same make up percentage you’d find from Payless to Prada, designer desserts have the luxury of still being affordable for everyone. Is it mental to pay $4 for two-bite macaron? Yes. But I can afford it! It makes me feel like I’m soiling myself, that I’m worth more than the entire pack of Oreos I could have eaten for the same price (and probably in as many sittings!)!

We’ll wait in massive lines for cookies the size of our face, we’ll get cupcakes out of ATMS, and we’ll eat ice cream that’s flavor profile is intended to mimic that of milk left in the bowl after you finish all your cereal.

Are you Team “That milk is the best!!” or Team “Uh, that sounds gross”?

Saint Joan on Broadway is 3 Hours Long and Absolutely Divine

I saw a 3 hour play on Broadway tonight. It was wonderful and totally worth the getting home and having no time to blog. This is why I live in the city that never sleeps! So I can see plays until 11PM on Wednesday nights! Then rush home to write about them before my daily blog turns into a pumpkin!

The play I saw was Saint Joan. It did not feel like a 3 hour play, I was surprised when I turned my phone back on and saw the time. It is brilliantly acted with a massive cast of men and one maid. Joan of Arc is played by Condola Rashad and she is a tour de force.
