Weekly New York Minutes #31

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this rainy Election week…

I spent the first rainy morning of hurricane season as a “course marshal” for Race for a Cure! An excuse to wear a poncho with no shame and bike around Central Park, all for a good cause! So many people came out despite the dreary weather. Honestly, running a race (or biking many miles around it!) is much more comfortable in a constant light drizzle than sweltering heat and sunshine- so we kind of lucked out weather-wise! It was a fun and inspiring event. Read More

I Commuted 2 Hours to Vote in the NY Primaries Today and It Was SO Worth It!

Today was Election Day in New York! I went 2 whole hours out of my way to perform my civic duty.

See, I just moved from Brooklyn to Queens. If I had my shit super together, I would have requested  an absentee ballot. But I don’t even have a permanent address right now (that is, until I sign a lease TOMORROW)! So I traveled the long, long distance from Manhattan to Brooklyn to Queens all to spend 2 minutes filling out a ballot. WORTH IT. Not voting is not an option these days!  Read More

Calle Ocho Holds a Critical New York Cliché Title: My Favorite Bottomless Brunch in NYC

One of the absolute worst experiences you can have in NYC is trying to find a place to live here. I am currently apartment hunting and my stomach is in knots of stress ever day. The only thing that makes it feel better? Drinking heavily. That’s where my favorite bottomless brunch of all time becomes imperative!

Brunch at Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side

Calle Ocho is a a latin restaurant on 81st Street near Central Park. All their food has a latin flavor, their bread baskets are next level with amazing sweet latin cheesy breads, but the best part is their drink menu. Unlike your typical New York cliché brunch mimosas and Bloody Marys, Calle Ocho offers bottomless sangria in EIGHT different flavors!  Read More

[Replay Cliché] Models: Beauty On The Outside, Bitchy On The Inside

I’m working on a big creative project (more about it soon!) that took all my time/energy this weekend. So here’s a post from the past, originally written in 2011. It’s currently New York Fashion Week (through Sept 14th) so it couldn’t be more topical. This was one of my weirder survival jobs, featuring the most mega, high fashion clichés I’ve ever written about.

I stared at the email in horror. This was not what I signed up for. Who would voluntarily subject themselves to such torture for the price of $30/hr? I got the job off craigslist, I should have known there was something they weren’t telling me. I looked at the e-mail again, hoping I’d miss-read.

YOUR SCHEDULE FOR TOMORROW’S EVENT:

10:30: Everyone arrives at the office, change into Jones New York provided outfits

10:40am: You will be split into teams of 5 (4 models and 1 brand ambassador) and put in cabs to head to your location

Nope, there was no mistaking it.  I agreed to the job a week previously, to work as a brand ambassador for a Fashion Week promotion. $30 an hour? Great. No one told me I’d be the one, single brand ambassador surrounded by professional models. No one signs up to be the fat kid on the playground. The one hippopotamus in a herd of antelope.

Weekly New York Minutes #30

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this back to school week…

Are end-of-summer sunsets extra brilliant? Or do I just appreciate them more, because I know the days are getting shorter? I don’t know the answer, but watching the sunset over Manhattan from the waterfront of my new borough (Queens!) was the most stunning minute of the week. Read More
