New York Weekly Minutes #34

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for the first week of October…

Perhaps as a warm up to the impending most wonderful time of the year, Rockefeller Center gets super festive for fall with hundreds of seasonal mums. Read More

[Replay Cliché] Epic Dating Secrets Revealed! Get Drunk, Stuff Your Face, Be Cool!

Originally posted October 2015. I still stand by these secrets 😉

Ugh. I don’t want to go on this date.

It’s been a ten hour day, working two different jobs, with nothing longer than a pee break. I just want to go home, order take out, and call it a day. But no. I have a date. With a dude I’ve never met in person. Which of course is the easiest kind of date to bail on. People do all the time. But no, not me. I hate that shit.

I make it a point to never bail on a date. Even if it means I show up late, having not eaten dinner, and cranky as fuck!

I arrive fashionably late. Typical. For the first time in my entire life, I approach the wrong guy. Atypical. My first online date was almost five years ago, this has always been a fear, one never before realized. I play it off super cool, I honestly don’t think anyone figured out what happened. But I know.

New York Cliché Confessions #1

So I’m Mary Lane and I call myself a New York cliché. Why? The whole struggling actor, big dreams thing kinda demanded a self deprecating label, as far as I was concerned. I’ve always enjoyed poking fun at stereotypes. Plus, now when I’m sucking down iced coffee, spilling in on my all black ensemble as I run down 5th Avenue, late to work because the MTA sucks – at least I can smile through the stress and think “Hey, I’m on brand!”

But here’s the confession time. There are plenty of ways I am NOT ON BRAND AT ALL. GASP – I KNOW. These are my New York Cliché DEFYING confessions!

Street Art Tuesday: Chalk Art in Washington Square Park

Walk through a park on a sunny day, and you might find chalk drawings by neighborhood kids.

Hearts! Smiley faces! Super cute!

Walk through Washington Square Park in New York City on a sunny day, and you might find chalk masterpieces being drawn by a local artist.

With a much higher quality chalk than the kiddies had, this artist hunched over the sidewalk of Washington Square Park on a Sunday afternoon and spent hours drawing vivid portraits. Read More

Escape NYC and Frolic Fields of Installations at Storm King Art Center

October 1st. It’s that time of year where I want to be outside as much as possible while it’s still pleasant and bright. Perfect time to head an hour upstate of the city to Storm King Art Center.

Storm King Art Center NYC Day Trip

Maybe you remember Storm King from that episode of Master of None. Maybe you’ve been there on your very first weekend get-away with your new SO because that’s kind of a New York cliché. Or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing about Storm King and wondering if it has anything to do with hurricane season? And monarchies? Read More

Weekly New York Minutes #33

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this rainy first week of fall…

Rainy Day Reflections

It rained pretty much every day this week, which was rough because I’m still in the process of moving- god knows which box my raincoat, boots, and umbrellas are in. But the one bright side to hurricane season in the city is when it creates double the beauty of NYC’s greatest icons, like this Chrysler Building reflection. I love making passers by do double takes when they try to see why I’m photographing dirty puddles! Read More

[Replay Cliché] I Say Yes To Day Drinking During A Work Day

I’m have quite the week, so here is a favorite post from the past. Originally posted in August 2014, this is the last time I dated a guy I met on the streets on NYC!

Three things I wish to always say yes to:

  1. The call of a sunny day.
  2. Drinks with charming strangers.
  3. Only in New York experiences.

It was the Thursday afternoon of a long week, one spent working behind a desk. At 3PM I couldn’t take it any more. The only way I’d make it through Friday was if I left my cubicle immediately. So I did. I grabbed a mango-banana-spinach smoothie from the cart outside the office and decided to walk around the block. Sun shining down from the clear blue sky, it was a beautiful late summer day. I sipped up vitamin C, soaked up vitamin D, and smiled at how much better I felt instantly.

I walked down Lexington Avenue, lost in my own little introverted world of if-my-lunch-is-this-healthy-I-can-totally-have-ice-cream-for-dinner and how-breathtaking-does-the Chrysler-Building-look-always? Suddenly my daydreaming was interrupted.

“Hey, do you want to come get a drink with us?”

The question came from two guys walking past me on the street. They were cute, age appropriate, nice-looking fellas dressed in checkered button ups and chino pants (I would ask them later- “Did you guys coordinate your outfits?”). They were jovial, smiling, they didn’t seem threatening or crazy. Read More
