Brooklyn Heights Promenade has one of the best views in New York City. That’s common knowledge, you can’t miss it.
What would be very easy to miss is subtle street art on Columbia Heights, the first street parallel to the promenade.
You’ll find this art at the north most exit of the promenade. Look close and find tiny renderings of New York icons built into the wrought iron fences surrounding two trees across from Squibb Park (gotta add that to the list of Harry Potter places to visit in NYC!).
The Statue of Liberty appears to be hand drawn.
The Brooklyn? Manhattan? Williamsburg? Bridge seamlessly emerges from the fence.
But the most striking part of this small display of iron wrought street art is this:
The Twin Towers.
It is surprisingly rare to find an image of these fallen icons in New York City. I imagine that is because even a glimpse of them can bring up a flood of feelings for so many New Yorkers. September 11th, today, is the day we are prepared for images, the day we dedicate to remembering.
I stared at these tiny Twin Towers wondering how long they’d been here. Over 18 years is my guess.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 18 years today.
Never forget. New York City never can and never will. One day when you least expect it, perhaps a tiny reminder of what was lost will fall at your feet on a picturesque walk in Brooklyn.
