A beautiful, and ever so New York cliché, work of art rests a top buildings parallel to the Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Whether framed by the sky or skyline, it emanates color no matter how gray the weather.
Tom Fruin Watertower Stained Glass Sculpture
After yesterday’s spring whiteout snowstorm, New Yorkers are in some serious need of color. Not that this art piece is new. This stained glass Watertower was installed in late 2014 and only supposed to be on display for a year. New York loved it so much, it’s still here four years later!
Just the the left of the sculpture, you can see the tiny Statue of Liberty, way off in the distance.
The best views of it are from the BQE. Very few things cater to automotive travel in NYC, but I guess this public art piece is one!
Here’s what it looks like when you’re driving down the expressway:
Really, as if the view needed enhancing!
You can also view Tom Fruin’s Watertower for the ground in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Not a place I frequent in the winter, I captured these snapshots over the summer:
I ran around the park at all angles trying to get the best view I could. These were the best I could do! I’m not complaining though, no matter what the angle, the light shining through the glass is pretty spectacular.
I am so pleased that this piece has remained to become an icon of the Brooklyn cityscape. Tom Fruin had another piece that went up in 2014, a Glass House that was river side, framed by the Brooklyn Bridge. It was maybe even more beautiful (but not as NY cliché!) as this Watertower. You can check out my post about that here:
You can also get a picture from the Promenade in the Historic District of Brooklyn Heights which hangs over the expressway. But your shots are very good.
I totally love the water tower! The stained glass sculpture looks so cool! Love that it’s been up longer than planned. Love how the view can be seen from all sorts of angles!
