New York Weekly Minutes #40

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this fall/pre-mature winter week…

Caging my Boyfriend at MoMA PS1

I’ve lived in NYC for TEN YEARS and this was the first time I ever visited MoMA PS1! Since moving to Queens, it’s now my neighborhood museum. MoMA PS1 is basically the weird, angsty sister of the super popular MoMA everyone knows and loves. The building was once an old public school (thus the PS). Much of the art on display is what you think of when you think of that modern art cliché. Where the work makes you slightly uncomfortable, it’s certainly not beautiful, and you wonder if you’re a little stupid for not “getting it”.

We saw a lot of uncomfortable video installations- including one involving clown torture (NOT A JOKE), a sculpture made with taxidermy forms (i.e the structures you buy and to stick the dead animal skin over), and this giant cage that you could walk through in the most claustrophobic way. It’s an interesting museum, and free for NYC residents, but not for the faint of heart.

A Statue of Liberty Holding a Toothbrush on the UES

This is a window of a dentist office on 86th and Madison. That is the HEART of the UES: Blair Waldorf would 100% get her teeth whitened in this exact area. So it cracked me up and kinda boggled my mind that this window display clearly hasn’t been changed in at least a decade. Looking in this window, I almost started hearing the cheesy dad jokes that Dr. no doubt adores. There’s a part of me that is tempted to look him up on ZocDoc…

Bernhardt/Hamlet on Broadway

Lucky me, I got to see a Broadway play this week! I’d heard great things about Bernhardt/Hamlet and I managed to snag $25 tickets for it’s final week of performances (it closes this Sunday 11/18). Are you shocked I scored Broadway tickets for so cheep? Anyone under age 35 can get this fantastic deal for all Roundabout Theatre Company shows. They have a program called HipTix that you do have to join, but it’s free, and then you can score BROADWAY TICKETS for the price of a freakin’ IMAX movie! I couldn’t recommend this more.

Bernhardt/Hamlet, however, does not get quite as enthusiastic a recommendation I’m afraid. I thought it was fine, but it did not live up to my expectations. I was especially disappointed that a play that’s all about the need for better theatrical roles for women had SO FEW female parts. Oh well, I’m still glad I got to see it. The cast was excellent, the set was the extravagance that Broadway audiences expect, and I’m always a sucker for a play-within-a-play.

First Snow of the Season!

November 15th it snowed, way more than anyone was expecting! You all know I’ve been trying my best to cling on to fall for as long as possible, but when these flakes started falling from the sky, I had to embrace the winter wonderland! It was pretty magical and I was lucky enough to be near Rockefeller Center, so I ran there to take it all in!

Day After Snow

The snow stuck around and creates this strange mix of fall and winter which was strange and beautiful in Central Park today!

Those are some fun moments from my week- how was yours?
