Weekly New York Minutes #32

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for the last week of summer…

I have a new friend who has this amaaaazing view of Manhattan from the roof of her Long Island City apartment. We were hanging out up here on Friday night, savoring the weather that doesn’t quite yet demand a jacket. In addition to the great city view, rooftops also provide a great view to the inside of neighboring apartments! We started swapping stories of private moments we’ve accidentally witnessed. Then, almost as if on cue, a couple appeared across the street, in full view, with no pants on! It was so awkward, so funny, and so New York.

Fresh pain alert! The start of street art going up on 8th Avenue and 21st Street. I can’t wait to see what it’ll be! And I can’t help but wonder if it’s another Kobra piece!

I spent a good amount of time in Washington Square Park last Sunday, the last Sunday of summer. The weather was perfect, it was packed with people and soooo many street musicians! In one corner, a drummer banging plastic pickle tubs, in another, a group of hippies singing Beatles songs. The middle path to the east of the fountain featured an NYU all-female a cappella group, singing the same songs my college a cappella group sang. A 100 yards from them was a jazz band. But wait! There’s more! Under the iconic arch, a BAG PIPE player droned- I’m not making this up- and then on the very western path was this GRAND PIANO. Can you even imagine that cacophony? It felt pretty special.

The 7 train wasn’t running to Manhattan from my stop last weekend. Which was a typical MTA pain in the ass. But it did mean I caught this awesome sunset over the LIRR tracks on Queens Boulevard. Pretty pretty bright side!
