Weekly New York Minutes #18

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this week gray, no-sunshine week of May…

Walking to my friend Beth’s annual Mother’s Day brunch in Kensington, Brooklyn. This neighborhood has beautiful houses with lovely gardens in front of them. Beth’s been inviting friends over for pancakes and mimosas every Mother’s Day since her mom died, making the day a fun tradition rather than a day to feel like shit. I couldn’t be with my mom for much easier reasons- she lives in California.

Looking up at the Hemsley Building on Park Avenue, I watched these window washers rapidly descend from the top stories. It looked TERRIFYING! Props to these guys! I’m sure safety measures are much better than they were decades ago…but it’s crazy how window washing technology is still basically “suspend a tiny box off the side of a skyscraper!”

This guy casually on his phone, waiting for the light on 14th Street, was wearing a hat covered in twinkle lights with leaves coming out of the band! Was he going to a costume party on a Thursday night? Does he host ghost tours with blog buddy Meghan Sara? I’ll never know! But his light up get-up made me smile and think of my favorite Easter Bonnet Parade.

Rushing out of Grand Central to work, I spotted this elegant woman in a evening gown. At 8:30AM? Was this the most fabulous walk of shame ever!? No, she was followed by a camera crew and proceeded to pose for shots while crowds of commuters whizzed right past the photoshoot. Such stark contrast! The photographer was yelling ALL the cliché things too, “Yes! You look gorgeous! That’s is right there! Fabulous!”

22nd Street between 9th and 8th was a buzz of activity. With large trucks, trailers, and tents filling both sides on the block, all indications of a film shoot taking place! Rather than be a low-key New Yorker, I took a closer look and spotted actors in period costumes. Must be the set for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! I couldn’t get a great photo, but the one above and the one below give you a taste!

Those were fun little moments of my week! How was yours?

  1. This sounds like a fun week!

What a great tradition your friend has. That’s beautiful. I’m sure her mom is somewhere happy that her daughter is celebrating Mother’s Day in such a positive way while being surrounded by supportive friends.

So I’ve kind of always wanted to go up on one of those window washer thingies. I mean, if I actually was presented with the opportunity, I can’t say for sure I’d be brave enough, but I kinda want to.

  2. Mmmmmm thanks for the shoutout! He definitely looks like he’s trying to work his Burning Man accessories into his everyday wardrobe (far be it from ME to point fingers on the subject!)
