Today was a thrilling teaser for spring. It was 77 degrees in New York City this February 21st. This is NYC in February? We emerged, bewildered, from our puffy jackets and walked the warm city streets. Only in a rush because well, that’s how New Yorkers walk. A welcome change from the GET-ME-INSIDE-ASAP hustle that’s gripped pedestrians since November.
NYC in February? This warm? Should we be scared or gleeful?
It was easy to enjoy. Skipping in celebration of sun on our bare skin and limitless footwear options. Restaurants opened sidewalk seating, ice cream shops had long lines but no one minded waiting. All cliché rudeness and impatience melts away for the first teaser day of spring!
Washington Square Park was full of people enjoying the sunny 70s.
A man had brought out a soapy bucket of water and was filling the park with bubbles. I sat on a bench and just binged watched bubbles for a good 20 minutes. Little kids chased them enchanted, adults posed for Instagram photos, and a puppy tried to eat the rainbow orbs!
Some managed to escape all those obstacles and float up passed the Washington Square arch.
Today was the winter vacation I dreamed about while trekking through the snow last Saturday night. We’d spent way too much at a fancy foodie dinner and I griped to my boyfriend, “We could’ve gone to Florida for that price! You can get round trip tickets for under $100 this time of year!” Well, Florida came to us…weather wise.
There will be no bare legs tomorrow, no lounging on park benches without a shiver of discomfort. Temps dip back into the 40s and stay there for at least the 10 day forecast. I’ve already seen some spring flowers. Spring is just around the corner. Staten Island Chuck definitely knew what was up when he didn’t see his shadow.
We were out today at Central Park. You got it right, the weather was just what the Dr ordered! Wasn’t it great!! But, alas, we too will head back inside and close up the windows, waiting for the real spring to come! Great post. We sure are enjoying them!

Yes! Yesterday was fantastic. I spent my lunch hour just walking through the UES enjoying the weather listening to 90s music. NYC Public Schools have “Presidents’ Week” instead of Presidents Day, so many of them were walking around with their ice cream cones and lapping up the sun. I’m originally from Florida, so the warmth was well-received. I was actually a little hot from walking around in my short-sleeved shirt and work pants!
