NYC Dating Advice: Never Start a Relationship without Visiting the Strand Book Store First

There’s a brilliant John Waters’ quote you may have seen on a tote bag, magnet, or newsfeed:

“If you go home with somebody, and they don’t have books, don’t fuck ’em.”

In NYC, it’s easy to find out this information without ever having to step foot in a book-hater hovel. Simply make sure your third date includes a stop at the New York institution, one of the few places that has managed to hold on in the era of Amazon, The Strand Book Store.

Escape from NYC: San Francisco Minutes

Every Friday (but this week delayed to Sunday!) I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” But since I’ve spent all this week talking about my California vacation, I’m featuring San Francisco Minutes instead!

Walking on Haight Street, we look up and see this dude sitting in the window of his gorgeous Victorian house reading. Are you fucking kidding me? There’s no way he was actually reading, right? He was just doing this to make us jealous? From across the street, I was convinced he was “reading” something like Jack Kerouac but we walked right underneath him and looked up and saw he was reading a sci-fi book. So I guess he was legit! Okay, but does he really live there, or is this an Airbnb? What app did this guy create to live in such an awesome place? I have so many questions! Read More

Vacationing in San Francisco When It’s Your Hometown

I lived in San Francisco from birth to age 18. So I really only know the city as a kid! If you ask me for city recommendations, I can tell you where the best birthday parties were held in the 90s and the where to find the sickest punk rock shows of the early 00s. Sure, I visited some Top Tourist Destinations as a kid…but I didn’t exactly appreciate them. I had plenty of walks up memory lane on this trip but the ultimate verdict is: it’s pretty rad to explore San Francisco as an adult! Surprise!

With that in mind, let’s continue from yesterday’s SF clichés

Escape NYC: San Francisco Cliché for a Vacay

I so often play tourist in New York City, the place I’ve lived for the past 10 years. So can you imagine what it was like last week when I visited my home town of San Francisco, a place I haven’t lived for 14 years? Not to mention I was showing it off to an actual, legit, bona fide tourist – my boyfriend who had never visited the Bay Area before?

Oh, we SF CLICHÉD the fuck out for an entire week. It was great.

Cable cars? You betcha.

Did you know I actually took the cable car as part of my commute home from high school? Read More

Street Art Tuesday: I Left My Art in San Francisco

I’m switching things up on the blog here, post-vacation, and taking on a more manageable blogging schedule of 5 days a week rather than the full 7. Just because I’m blogging about the city that never sleeps need not mean no sleep ’til Brooklyn for me! So let’s welcome the switch-a-roo from Saturday Street Art to Street Art Tuesday!

Here’s some of the eye catching street art I saw in San Francisco while on vacation last weekend.

The New York Cliché Can’t Escape NYC on Her CALIFORNIA Vacation

I’m back! Back in the New York blues! Back to the daily grind and the hustle and bustle of NYC cliché after 10 glorious days in California. We hung out at the beach, hiked under giant redwoods, got tipsy in wine country, and biked across the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a fantastic vacation, full of much needed R&R, and the perfect escape from sweltering New York.

Except we didn’t really escape New York! NYC was everywhere I looked, all over the San Francisco Bay Area!

There’s New York Apparel on Haight Street. I was sorely tempted to walk in and say, “Excuse me, I’m the creator of the blog New York Cliche, which basically makes me an NYC expert, and gold glitter bell bottoms and mother-lovin CAT LEGGINGS are basically the OPPOSITE of “New York Apparel”. Change yo name, fools.”  Read More

Summer Vacation = Ditching NYC for California

Summer vacation is the best kind of cliché!

I’m currently packing (/procrastinating on packing) for a 10 day vacation to California- my homeland! It’s going to be the best of times. My best friend is getting married and I get to show my boyfriend my home town for the first time.

I can’t wait! We leave tomorrow at 6PM, I’m already planning to avoid getting to JFK the only way I know how- in a MAD PANIC.

California, CALIFORNIA, HERE WE COMMEEE!

I’ll be taking a total vacation while in San Francisco-  that means blogging too! But I’ll try to share some brief minutes and maybe a guest post or 2. Want to see some previous California posts? Check out San Francisco and learn about my polyamorous relationship with both coasts.

Do you have fun summer vacation plans? Tell me about them! Want to write a guest post that can be shared on New York Cliché in the next 10 days? YES, PLEASE! Email me at marylane[at]newyorkcliche.com
