Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this weirdly long (just me?) week of October…
Maybe the week felt especially long for me because I worked on Monday, while many Americans had the day off. I walked outside my office in Midtown and heard blaring pop music- what the hell is going on!? The Columbus Day Parade was less than a block away on 5th Avenue. I pretty much forgot people celebrate what we officially call “Indigenous People’s Day” in my hometown. Of course, NYC is known for Italian-Americans, so it really shouldn’t have surprised me.
Someone painted a purple heart on the side of a construction site, again, in Midtown. This tiny, simple symbol was exactly what I needed to see this week. Especially in this part of town that is so crazy corporate, so oppressively powerful-men-in-suits. It made me want to take that tagging class I blogged about earlier in the week. Could I, too, be a street art vigilante spreading love around the concrete jungle? Even with my minimal artistic talent, I can draw a heart! Hmm…something to ponder…
Just two monks and they’re having a good time checking out the awesome display at the Lego Store at Rock Center!
Even crazy corporate Midtown has some lovely public spaces! This one on 53rd between Madison and 5th has a full wall water fountain! The rush of the water is calming, and perfect for drowning out the conversations at other tables.
Looking up has a reputation for making you look like a tourist…but sometimes it’s so worth it. This was on rainy Thursday evening when the sky was cloudy and ominous..but the lights were bright and warm and it was finally starting to fee like fall!
Wow…I’m kinda sad that all my moments are from right around where I work! My daylight hours outside are getting limited to my lunch break…I might have to start waking up earlier to combat this…
I am so, so ready for the weekend. Going apple picking tomorrow! Do y’all have fun weekend plans? Have a great one!!
Love your photographs! Totally feel you on the loss of daylight hours.
You could definitely be a love-spreading street artist too! I completely feel you on the daylight hours. Throw in Beijing pollution too and it makes outside time pretty limited! But, it’s October and almost Christmas so I can live with it 🙂
