Today was Election Day in New York! I went 2 whole hours out of my way to perform my civic duty.
See, I just moved from Brooklyn to Queens. If I had my shit super together, I would have requested an absentee ballot. But I don’t even have a permanent address right now (that is, until I sign a lease TOMORROW)! So I traveled the long, long distance from Manhattan to Brooklyn to Queens all to spend 2 minutes filling out a ballot. WORTH IT. Not voting is not an option these days!
I certainly considered skipping it. There are a lot of things I could have done with those 2 hours. But ultimately I decided I’d be an asshole if I didn’t vote. The outcome of elections are far too important to not participate. Never was this lesson more stark and painful than in 2016. Every day features constant reminders of how madly important it is to vote.
I hope you made it out to the polls today, but if you somehow didn’t get your shit together, DON’T WORRY. You can redeem yourself! Midterms are coming up in November and this is so, so, so important. VOTE. It’s so easy to feel helpless and like your one measly vote doesn’t count. THEY ALL DO. If you aren’t registered, it takes 2 minutes: https://www.vote.org/register-to-vote/ If you ARE registered, your polling place is most likely a short distance from your house, not a 2 hour commute in another borough. But if you’re like me and need to make an address change (just fill out voter registration again), or request an absentee ballot (super easy: https://www.vote.org/absentee-ballot/)
Happy Election Day! Was your civic duty a breeze? If you want the inside scoop on polling site, check out Meghan Sara’s blog: Top Ten Reasons You Should Sign Up To Be A Poll Worker!!! She’s worked the polls for years, loves it, and I reckon could get the most apathetic among you fucking psyched to vote!
Good for you Mary, voting is important whether you have to do it or not (voting is compulsory in Australia except for local government elections) . If people are apathetic and don’t vote or in our case don’t cast a valid vote then they have no right to complain about the outcome if they don’t like it. Every vote does count.
<3 Awww!!! <3 Thank you thank you thank you for linking to me! <3 Next time sign up to be a poll worker! NYC needs it's people to keep the system running smoothly! Ok maybe I'm biased … 😀

I commend you for going to so much trouble to vote. The importance is so apparent by just watching the news for about 5 minutes.

Wow, that is some serious commitment! It is important though, I think a lot of Americans would have the same view as you after the last time!
