You know what the end of August means: back-to-school time! I celebrated in the most appropriate way possible for a child-free, 32 year-old, New Yorker: seeing Mean Girls on Broadway with two of my best friends from grade school!

Back to School with “Mean Girls” on Broadway

It might be hard to believe but we had even more fun watching the show than we did posing for this picture. 

Mean Girls is always an enjoyable movie but…I think I like the musical even better! Tina Fey updated her own script for this production and it will give you every laugh you know and love but also so much more. The musical runtime is an entire hour longer than the movie’s short 90 minutes. Sure, we’ve know all these characters since 2004 but by the time the actors take their bow, you’ll feel like you know them so much better. And love them even more. Even the Plastics have the vulnerability and depth that makes for brilliant live theater.

So the book is awesome. All the actors are excellent and so talented. We saw a lot of understudies on the night we went- this is common for back-to-school time when Broadways stars squeeze in their vacations. Cady, Damian, and Gretchen roles were all covered by understudies but never left us wanting for even a moment.

The Broadway audience cliché is to be disappointed when understudies and swings go on for starring roles. Get that rumor out of your Burn Book!

I love the rare chance to see these actors shine! Understudies work so hard and always bring a slight extra thrill  – like the energy on opening night. Instead of groaning, try Getting excited when you learn one is going on!

I absolutely recommend this show if you want a fun night at the theater. That said is I were going to write some bitchy things in my Burn Blog, I’d say this: where the book dazzles, the score is fun but entirely forgettable. The choreography is much the same. But it doesn’t really matter because watching mega talented triple threats slay both? It’s the best. It’s so GROOL.
