Weekly New York Minutes #27

Every Friday I feature some fleeting moments from my week that made me stop and think, “I’m so lucky to live in NYC!” And maybe some that made me think, “Bahaha this city is ridiculous and I love it.” Here we go for this hump week of August…

Standing on the Q train, I watched a young girl play with her Pusheen Cat key chain and her Statue of Liberty souvenir. It was so adorable and uplifting. Seriously, in this one fleeting moment, zooming along under the streets of New York City. I had a glimmer of hope for America’s global reputation with future generations.

Riding my bike home on Tuesday, I rode straight into a Brooklyn block party. On a Tuesday night? I walked my bike through and snapped this photo to capture the minute. Immediately following, a police officer approached me: “Excuse me ma’am.” I was all flustered, worried he was I wasn’t allowed to take photos because there were children present? Or something? He assured me I could take as many photos as I liked and that he was just approaching me to ask if I’d like to have my bike registered with my local police precinct as a theft prevention. If someone steals a bike, it can be very hard for the owner to prove it was theirs, he explained. I had my bike stolen in college, I’d love to never repeat that experience. So I said yes. He took down my name, address, found the serial number of my bike, and then branded it with it’s very own ID.

The process was very simple, took 5 minutes, and he said anyone can bring their bike to their local precinct and they’ll register it. Bike owners of NYC, you might want to consider it!

I heard about the Sing For Hope project which placed 50 painted pianos on the streets of NYC for the month of June, allowing anyone to sit down and play. From what I’d read, they were supposed to be distributed into public schools after June 24th. Well, apparently someone forgot to pick up the one in Port Authority! The instrument was surrounded by Port Authority characters, none of whom appeared to know each other but all greatly enjoyed the song stylings of the older gentleman sitting on the bench. At least two in the area were dancing like no one was watching. This was one of those moments where New York City feels like a community and it made me smile more then I ever have in the transit purgatory of Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Those are the interesting moments from my week mostly spent at work and at home packing for my upcoming move. If you have any fun minutes of your week you’d like to share, please leave a comment. In the meantime, have a great weekend all!
