Did you know that for 16 summers, people gather in the middle of New York City to practice yoga? Right out in the open, for all the world to see?
Bryant Park offers free yoga classes every Tuesday morning and Thursday evening all summer long. It’s really a sight to see hundreds of people (mostly women, but all are welcome!) moving in sun salutations together on the giant lawn, under the watchful eye of multiple yoga instructors and the Empire State Building.
Interested in Bryant Park yoga? Expect car horns, sirens, and that million dollar feeling of community in a city of millions.
You don’t even have to bring a mat! According to Bryant Park’s website, their sponsor Gaiam provides mats for the first 1,200 participants. They recommend getting there 30 minutes before classes begin to secure a mat. Can you imagine practicing yoga with over a thousand other people? That idea is likely either inspiring, or horrifying to you. If inspiring, try to make it to Bryant Park this summer!
Just today, I walked through Bryant Park and saw the lawn covered in chairs. A massive game of Musical Chairs is happening in Bryant Park at 7:30pm tonight. Who would have thought to host such an event in NYC? The same people who host a square dance! Looks so fun!
Seriously, if you’re ever looking for something fun and free to do in NYC, Bryant Park has classes and events all summer long. Learn more about their programs on the Bryant Park calendar. Monday Movie Nights are especially popular and the schedule, starting June 18 a week from tonight, looks truly awesome this year!
