Saint Joan on Broadway is 3 Hours Long and Absolutely Divine

I saw a 3 hour play on Broadway tonight. It was wonderful and totally worth the getting home and having no time to blog. This is why I live in the city that never sleeps! So I can see plays until 11PM on Wednesday nights! Then rush home to write about them before my daily blog turns into a pumpkin!

The play I saw was Saint Joan. It did not feel like a 3 hour play, I was surprised when I turned my phone back on and saw the time. It is brilliantly acted with a massive cast of men and one maid. Joan of Arc is played by Condola Rashad and she is a tour de force.

Believably captures the magnetism, conviction, and courage, she brings depth and humanity to a saint. Condola Rashad was nominated for a TONY for this role only yesterday, no surprise she absolutely deserves the accolades! This play is worth seeing just for her riveting performance.

I loved this play on all levels – the period costumes, the beautiful set, the etherial lighting, the excellent cast, and the fantastic direction by Daniel Sullivan who I’ve mostly seen knocking Shakespeare in the Park productions out of the park. But I love theatre. I wouldn’t recommend this play to every one.

I would recommend Saint Joan to people who love theater. Or loved English or history class in high school. Or loved learning about Joan of Arc when they were a teenageR…wondering maybe, just maybe, they’d be chosen to hear voices someday too..

Saint Joan was written by George Bernard Shaw in 1924. This play was written almost 100 years ago! I was amazed at how well it holds up. I never would have guessed it was written that long ago, I only had the hunch because I vaguely remember studying Shaw in college.  It brings up a lot of questions and discussion about religion, conviction and herd mentality. “What is truth?” and “How do you decided who to believe?” are more relevant now than ever.

This is one of those plays that makes you think. Sorry, Saint Joan is not exactly the escapism entertainment you might need from the news right now.

Honestly, I really enjoyed seeing it with the eyes of the Trump Era. This production never hit that point over the head or even goes out of it’s way to highlight it, though. The script and the historically based story speak for themselves.

If you are interested in seeing this excellent play, there are some great ticket deals out there. 3 hour revivals of plays written in the 1920s aren’t the easiest sell, which works in favor of us theatre nerds who love them! Anyone under 30 can buy $30 tickets in advance through Manhattan Theatre Club. If you’re like me and over that hill, Today Tix or TXTS can likely hook you up!
