New York Cliché of the Day: Rose Crystal Tower Public Art in Union Square

“All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray…” I sing that Mamas and Papas song a lot in the winter months. Any flash of color is beautiful and excitement-worthy. That’s why I stop for all street art and I’m especially grateful for Chihuly’s public art in Union Square.

Dale Chihuly’s Rose Crystal Tower

The trees are bare, the sky is cloudy, but we do have yellow taxis and a giant purple glass sculpture! There is hope!

I actually watched the team assemble this art piece back in October. My appreciation was lacking back then… I’d given up eating sugar for the month and this was like a giant rock candy mirage taunting me!

Now I’m back to eating sugar, back to believing that rock candy is definitely one of the worst candies (right?). Craving color instead of sweets and this statue lights up my dreary nor’easter life!

Yes, it lights up in the dark. I hope Dale Chihuly makes a night-light souvenir addition.

If you’re ravenous for color or just want to see some world-class art for free, head to the south east corner of Union Square and enjoy this magenta masterpiece. You have plenty of time, so no need to rush if you’re entrenched in couch hibernation. The Rose Crystal Tower will remain on the New York City streets through October 2018.
