New York Cliché of the Day: Union Square Greenmarket

Four days a week, Union Square transforms into a produce wonderland that puts the neighboring Whole Foods to shame.

Union Square Greenmarket: a fresh oasis in the Concrete Jungle

Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday farmers, and bakers, and organic cheese makers set up tents on the north and west sides of Union Square.

The market is year round, vendors from around the tristate area truck in even on the coldest days of winter. But with spring in the air on this last day of February, everything was starting to perk up!

Strolling around the farmer’s market is a lovely activity, when weather permits. In the cold it’s much more of a MUST SHOP AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE situation.

Root vegetables and apples reign supreme in green market during winter months.

Which might sound boring until a vendor shows off his roots! How awesome and colorful is this variety? I had no idea! Super effective marketing – I want to try them all!

Produce, baked goods, fresh meat and cheese, honey, and flowers: you’ll find a marvelous selection at the Greenmarket in Union Square.

The apple selection is pretty impressive too. Often they’ll have samples so you can truly taste the difference between difference from empire to golden.

Farmer’s markets are known for being generous with samples. This greenmarket does not disappoint!

You can always count on a yummy baked good made from scratch and a cup of apple cider (hot or cold!) no matter what the season. Always a favorite snack, perfect to grab and go sit on a bench in Union Square or run of to work if your commute takes you through the area.

Pricing is very typical for New York City. Call it more expensive than Trader Joe’s but maybe a smidge cheaper than Whole Foods.

Unless of course you’re looking for adorable “tete-a-tete” miniature daffodils. Then the Union Square farmer’s market has the best deal in town.

Many New York clichés like me dream of the day where we can afford fresh flowers from the greenmarket every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. For now, we settle for just buying them on special occasions. Photographing them for Instagram tides us over.

The Union Square Greenmarket has amazing compost and clothing collection available. All producers also accept EBT/SNAP. For more info about these services and if you want to learn more about the greenmarket in general, check out their website here grownyc.org

Have you ever been to this farmer’s market? Is there another one in NYC you love just as much, maybe even more than this one? What’s your favorite thing about farmer’s market’s in general?

  1. This all looks incredible. I don’t know why but seeing all of this freshness in the middle of the city just makes it look even more appealing than it would anywhere else. I guess that’s kinda why people love Central Park so much. All of that food looks amazing! I’m a little hungry now… The farmers market in my tiny town only happens once a month so this is the ultimate luxury! x
