Fall was about as late to the party this year as a New Yorker taking the MTA on a weekend. But just like your friends do when you stumble through the door, 40 minutes late after a subway trip from hell, we are greeting this season with all the enthusiasm, cheer, and clichés!
Hey fall! Nice of you to show up! As a chronically late person myself, I don’t blame you for your tardiness one bit! Now bring on the pumpkins and pies, the boots and the tights, the cider and apples, and cozy cold nights!
Come now, could I really call myself a New York Cliché if I didn’t visit a pumpkin patch and go apple picking this weekend?
Sure, an apple orchard close to NYC might be the only place on earth where the apples are more expensive that Whole Foods and the ordeal to check-out is more involved than a Trader Joe’s line ( it involved a line AND a tractor ride!) but obviously, it’s worth it.
Of course, I went apple picking with my fella. Because that’s the biggest couple cliché there is this time of year!
There was no pie baking at the end of our excursion, oh no. My guy made a delicious brie and apple soup with the fruits of our labor. Yes, I might be bragging a little. Just look how sweet this guy is:
Oops, made him blush.
All this just one hour outside NYC at the Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm, it’s even accessible by Metro North if you don’t mind a 15 minute taxi ride from the Croton-Harmon station. It’s a perfect city day trip.
Happy fall! What are your favorite seasonal activities?
I should share that in addition to pumpkin and apple picking this weekend, I also watched the classic Halloween movies Casper and Beetlejuice…both for the very first time! I especially loved Beetlejuice. A musical version is coming to Broadway in 2019 and just started it’s pre-Broadway trial yesterday! Suddenly I am intrigued and invested in it doing the movie justice! What are your favorite Halloween movies?
