Escape NYC and Frolic Fields of Installations at Storm King Art Center

October 1st. It’s that time of year where I want to be outside as much as possible while it’s still pleasant and bright. Perfect time to head an hour upstate of the city to Storm King Art Center.

Storm King Art Center NYC Day Trip

Maybe you remember Storm King from that episode of Master of None. Maybe you’ve been there on your very first weekend get-away with your new SO because that’s kind of a New York cliché. Or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing about Storm King and wondering if it has anything to do with hurricane season? And monarchies?

Storm King Art Center is an outdoor museum that sits on 500 acres of fields and forests in New Windsor, New York, about 90 minutes outside NYC.

There are an assortment of different ways to get there, which you can find outlined on the Storm King website, but the best one by far is having a fella who likes driving and wants to rent a car. I can speak from experience that I 100% road to Storm King.

Most of the art at Storm King is site specific. Where else do artists have the freedom to create massive sculptures that will sit in the middle of nature? This alone makes the place special. Exploration is built in to the experience.

500 acres is HUGE. It’s pretty impossible to see everything (at least, if you don’t want to collapse from exhaustion).

Frequent forks in the road forced us to just pick a path and hope for the best!

This method did not disappoint. We rented bikes, which is an awesome option Storm King offers that makes taking on 500 acres of rolling hills a lot more manageable. Art and biking together in one museum on a sunny day?? It’s like all my favorite things! If they’d been handing out free macarons I would’ve sworn this was some upstate utopian paradise!

(Real geese, not statues!)

Storm King is open through December 9th, though hours get shorter after daylight savings. The surrounding woods will be beautiful in the fall, so definitely try to go while leaves are still on the trees. There was already a bit of a foliage preview while we were there on the penultimate day of September!
