Instagram Dessert Trend at New Territories Eats and Sweets on the LES

If you eat a “‘Grammable” dessert but don’t post it, the calories don’t count, right?

Because really, what’s the point?

I have mixed feelings about the current trend of dazzling looking desserts made explicitly for social media. Oh sure, they’re fun…but they usually don’t taste as good as they look. Not only that, they’re so often wasteful. Is there anything more First World than getting a giant, fancy looking dessert just to photograph, taking one bite, then throwing the rest out?

Then again, I hate to be the spoil-sport ragging on such fun, creative creations!

I visited New Territories on the Lower East Side and tried not to be a Negative Nancy.

New Territories Eats and Sweets

This ice cream shop is all about sweeeeet looking desserts. They offer an NYC twist on traditional Hong Kong eats and sweets. The bubble waffle cone is their specialty, I was excited as I’d never tried one before.

It’s a massive dessert. My fella and I were very happy splitting it…which I know is not what a blogger is supposed to do! The whole reason any blogger even has a boyfriend is to double the amount of food you can try and photograph! Duh! I totally fail at this. I hate feeling too full or wasting food. The whole reason I have a boyfriend is because splitting desserts is the best portion control. #BloggingFail

What did we order? I’m honestly not sure! There was an option on the menu to order The Whatever – “Save yourself a headache – choice made by our chef of the day”. was all about it. But again, a good blogger is supposed to order the most photogenic/popular dessert! #BloggingFail AGAIN.

It’s definitely honeycomb ice cream topped with whipped marscapone cheese. This was delicious. All the cookies stuck in it were superfluous and just for show. The bubble waffle cone was interesting, I think it was blueberry, but also hard to eat and messy. I found myself missing the simple joy of licking a traditional cone.

If you want a dessert photo to bump up your Instagram game, you will find it at New Territories 190 Orchard Street. They are all over the loaded milkshake AND unicorn trends. It’s a cute place, that puts a priority on dessert attractiveness. Does the taste compare to Oddfellows around the corner? I really can’t say! All the extras are to distracting for my taste!
