Summer in the City Recommendation: Buy Yourself a Frozen Flower at Amorino Gelato

New York City summer humidity has hit and that means one thing. I want to eat ice cream all the time. Fortunately, NYC has more options for frozen treats than there are meals in the day with ice cream, soft serve, frozen yogurt, and gelato. Today I popped into Amorino  Gelato in Greenwich Village. It’s a popular gelato chain from Italy that now has locations all over the world, including 4 in NYC.

They are known for their flower cones, often toped with suggestive looking macarons. Missing the explosion of spring flowers that have long since left the city, it’s no surprise I’m seeking them out in my food.

This little girl cried out “I want an ice cream macaron!” as she walked past. Only NYC kids! There are no scoops here, only petals, a method that is not only pretty, but allows for trying many more flavors than a simple scoop might. I went for 3 fruity tastes: lemon, melon, and their seasonal special black current.

I know I may have lost the chocolate lovers among you. I love fruit gelato, especially in the summer. Amorino gelato was amazingly flavorful, the lemon and black current tangy and acidic, the melon mellow and sweet. They went especially well together.

Nothing like gelato in the summer time

I opted out of the signature macaron topping. The cone alone was quite enough, thank you.I didn’t need anything distracting me from frozen deliciousness, no matter how much  love macarons.

This location at University Place and 10th Street is an especially good date spot. A first date of gelato instead of typical drinks is a nice way to mix things up. I usually think flowers are too much for a first date, but gelato ones are actually perfect. The cafe is spacious and cozy while Washington Square Park is the perfect stroll away.

Other Amorino Gelato locations in NYC are:

Theater District at 721 8th Ave between 45th and 46th
UWS at 414 Amsterdam Ave and 80th
Chelsea at 162 8th Avenue and 18th

Do you go for fruit or milk when ordering gelato in the summer? What’s your favorite gelato flavor?
