New York Cliché of the Day: Winter Attractions of Washington Square Park

You’ll always see something interesting when you walk through Washington Square Park. Today there are three major attractions:

1. A Christmas tree, which graces the park every December

2. The iconic Washington Square arch, it never leaves

3. Inside the arch a Public Art Fun installation, ‘Good Fences Make Good Neighbors’ by Ai Wei Wei. On view into February

Washington Square Park has been a site for protests since the 70s. The park is seeing a lot of anger and action these days. It’s the perfect place for this art work.

A sign presumably left from a Anti-Muslim-Ban rally in the park. A well-placed complement to this art contemplating walls, borders, and fences.

The inside reflects the surroundings and invites reflection on the current political shit show climate.

What do you see?

I imagine the art piece and tree may be even more visually stimulating at night. ‘Good Fences Make Good Neighbors’ is on view in Washington Square park through February 11, 2018. The tree won’t last that long, but I think we can count on it through New Years!

  1. Ahhh, Washington Square Park during the winter season resembles a scene from a romantic comedy! With snow-covered arch photographs and jazz music playing by the benches, it embodies the coziest magic of New York City. Holding a cup of hot cocoa, you are experiencing the quintessential New York cliché dream!
