NY Cliché of the Day: On the Street Where Carrie Bradshaw Lives

Perry Street in New York’s West Village is tree-lined, mostly residential, and only six blocks long. It has a couple cute bars that make for nice first date spots and no shortage of  brownstones to lust after #NYCGOALS. Most New Yorkers would just think of it as another Village street that’s easy to get lost on because it’s not numbered. Yet there is one trivia fact about Perry Street that makes it an ultimate destination for a niche NYC fandom…

On any given day, you’ll find crowds on this quiet New York City street photographing a building just off West 4th. Why??

No, it’s not Alexander Hamilton’s downtown home.

It’s not another addition to Taylor Swift’s real estate empire.

Not Melania Trumps safe house.

66 Perry Street is Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment from the TV show Sex and the City.

Or at least it’s the exterior shot of her apartment, and unlike the Friends’ apartment, Sex and the City did shoot many scenes on this very street. The fictional character Carrie Bradshaw does NOT live in the West Village. She lives in the East 70s – the completely opposite side of Manhattan. Still, fans of the show come here every day to feel like their ultimate New York icon.

Ya, even I couldn’t resist!

Funny enough, when I ran into Sarah Jessica Parker who played Carrie, it was a mere 3 blocks from this building…sure blurs the lines of fiction and reality, doesn’t it?

Now, people actually live in this building and clearly don’t like the attention. They’ve strung a chain across the stairs to stop Bradshaw wannabes from sitting on them…

I couldn’t help but wonder…who are the people who Live at 66 Perry Street?

Have they lived in this building since the 90s, before Sex and the City ever appeared on HBO? Have they watched in horror as the internet allowed their beautiful brownstone to become a tourist destination? Do the inhabitants rent or own? Do they pay $750 a month like Carrie claimed to in season 4?

OR

Did these mystery inhabitants move into 66 Perry as giant SATC fans? Was this their ultimate dream, living life as close to Carrie Bradshaw’s as you can get? Literally walking in her designer shoe footsteps? … Then over the years, as the crowds grew and tour buses started driving by, as the embarrassment of Sex and the City 2 movie sunk in….has the dream become a nightmare?

Do you like seeing NYC movie and TV locations? If you can’t get enough Sex and the City, there’s legit a 3.5 hour tour devoted to the show. I haven’t been on it, so I can’t vouch for it, but you can check it out here.

  1. I’m not going to lie, I wouldn’t say I’m a die hard fan of S&tC but I would so stop there and take all the pictures because I can! I love your thought at the end, now I wonder about the people who currently live there and how they feel about people stopping there!

  2. I would be so intrigued about who actually lives in this house too! If anyone does live there, it must be a total nightmare for them just to leave the house in the morning haha! I think that if I were the owner, I’d start charging for photos, you’d make a fortune! 😉 I’m not surprised that you couldn’t resist a pic, I wouldn’t be able to either! Love your rainbow umbrella too!

  3. I’m intrigued to know who lives in that house as well, it must be pretty annoying! A brilliant post about your adventures X

  4. I don’t know if it was the same tour you linked, but I went on a SATC tour a few years ago. It was fun! I went before the movies came out so if it’s the same tour, they’ve added a lot of destinations.

We weren’t allowed to go near the famous stoop, though. I don’t think they even took us down the block. We saw beautiful brownstones, but not THE brownstone. eh. I live in Brooklyn, so I could pass by any ol’ time!

  5. Part of me understands why the people who live here have to put that sign up (imagine coming home from work and there are random people on your stoop taking pics for the ‘gram?) but then another part of me is like, COME ONNNN. Lighten up and let people enjoy it for a second and leave! Are there seriously THAT many people visiting it every day? The show’s been off the air since 2004! 6. Haha, oh my gosh imagine living there! They should absolutely charge for photos!
I love your rainbow umbrella! I’ll be honest, I’ve only ever seen a few episodes of SATC so I would probably walk straight past, but the street looks absolutely beautiful!

  7. I love this post, I bet at least one person in the building is a SATC fan but it must be so frustrating fighting through people to get into your own building, great post!

  8. Omg I loved this post! New York is top of my wish list for places to visit and would love to visit lots of the film and TV locations! I’m guessing it must be frustrating living in one of these buildings with a constant stream of visitors going by and taking pictures!

    Thanks for sharing?

  9. I thought I recognised that housefront, ha ha! It got me thinking about all the other front doors that Instagrammers and tourists pose in front of as well. How weird it must be (and probably annoying too sometimes!) to live somewhere that so many strangers like taking pictures of. Like you, I wonder if they did live there first or whether they were fans and moved in. Great post!

  10. I’m a big SATC fan, but on the many times I’ve been to New York I can’t say it’s ever crossed my mind to attempt to sit on Carrie’s fake steps. I really hope the people who live there have been there since the 90s, the fame I’m sure will have added some value for them as long as they can handle the constant cameras! x

  11. I am by this location all the time, and actually never thought to go pass by this house! I actually didn’t know that her house was actually filmed in NYC! It’s a shame they don’t allow people to take pictures on the steps. I can totally imagine that getting annoying for the actual residents there. Great post xxx
