  1. I like John Updike’s quote best. And reading these statements about New York makes me even more excited for my trip; I’ll be visiting your city very soon and I can’t wait to visit the places that I’ve read about and seen in the movies. You’re so lucky that you get to live there.

    1. His quote is definitely the one that makes me smile the most. So excited for you that you finally get a vacation! When are you visiting? After peak tourist season? Great choice. If you have any questions or want specific advice, let me know!

    1. Bet you recognize it from The Great Gatsby! I just re-read it recently, definitely a different experience reading it while living in the city where much of it is set! It has so many beautiful passages about NYC, the way F. Scott Fitzgerald paints pictures with his words is mesmerizing. I didn’t appreciate that enough when studying his novels in school!

      1. Oh yes! I haven’t read The Great Gatsby since I was about 15 and I’d definitely appreciate it differently (possibly more) now that I’m in my twenties. Maybe I’ll re-read it this summer. I saw the Carey Mulligan/Leonardo diCaprio movie version a few months ago but I was disappointed by it.

      2. I’d absolutely recommend reading it again! As it’s such a summery book now’s the perfect time. I saw that movie version a month or so ago, was disappointed too. Ah well. I don’t think any film could ever come close to the magnificence of the book.

  2. When I first saw New York I was twenty, and it was summertime, and I got off a DC-7 at the old Idlewild temporary terminal in a new dress which had seemed very smart in Sacramento but seemed less smart already…
